A quick follow-up on my post earlier today about another Blackberry 7290 problem and my trip to Cingular for a replacement unit. Looks like it might have been a software problem.
I was running version 3.8.0.139 of the Blackberry OS. The rep said there were known issues with call quality on that version. I needed to update my OS to 4.0. They gave me instructions on how to do the update.
When I got home I went to cingularbb.webhop.net which redirects to Blackberry's site to download the OS update. The upgrade went in without a problem.
I have made a few calls with no drops, but we'll see how things work over the next few days before I gain back my confidence in the device.

I had the same problem. The updated software for the 7290 did not solve the problem for me. It improved with the updated software, but the problem still occurs on some calls.
What really irks me is that Cingular knows about this problem, yet they continue to sell the 7290s witht he old software.

We just recently received two blackberry 7290 models and after less than a week were totallty dis-satisfied ,one unit had display issues the other had a habit of shutting off and not able to turn back on unless removal and install of battery,at which point it would display a prefetch exception error.
Even after erasing and installing newer software it still occured.
Have since sent them back and will get something different and hopefully better.

I have the same exact problem with a Blackberry 7290 that I just bought. I've only had it for a week and every day at least once or twice it will shut off out of nowhere and I have to remove the battery as mentioned. This is a pain! Aside from this I love all the features on it, but can't go on like this. I see that this was posted back in September, but I'm hoping that there's someone else out there who has dealt with this issue and has a solution. Can you believe it just shut of while I'm writing this??!?!?

I'm having the same shut off problem. Besides getting something else, does anyone have a solution or at least a diagnosis of what is going on with this PDA?

I'm still having this crazy problem with this Blackberry phone. Hopefully, you find some info or a solution and share it. If not, I'll definitely get rid of this thing.

Well I've given up already. I've come to the conclusion that this phone is just a piece of shit that I wasted my money on. I ended up ordering a T-Mobile Dash phone.

I am having the same problem with my 7290. It has been getting worse. The problem started with dropped calls to intermittent no network signal. Now intermittent network signal and when signal is there I can receive but as soon as I dial I lose network. Nobody including RIM know what to do about it. Has anybody solved this problem? I am on the verge of throwing it away.

I have the same network problem. I'll get the network very RARELY. And when I do.. I'll try calling out and automatically it loose all the bars I had. My phone was working just fine a couple of days ago. And then bam, it started acting up. I updated my software and everything, nothing changed. Help?
