Making the Case for a Publix Blog

+ Posted by Josh Hallett on 10.03.05 // 10:30 AM

My 'Does Publix Need a Blog' post is quite popular. On a daily basis there are a number of inbound searches from Google looking for a publix blog. The post has now started to get comments from Publix employees. One recent commenter said this:

A Publix blog would be great thing to have. It would allow associates to share valuable stories and information about the company and its operations. It would also be a means to communicate with upper level management on an informal basis. Publix is a large company, but it is also a family. I feel like a company blog would allow all of our associates to communicate with persons outside their individual stores. Another reason to have this sort of forum would be to get feedback and suggestions from our customers without the information first going through corporate. If the information were openly available, all associates could benefit from one customers suggestion, rather than on a store-by-store basis.

So many great points. Let's highlight them:

- allow associates to share valuable stories and information about the company and its operations
- a means to communicate with upper level management on an informal basis.
- a company blog would allow all of our associates to communicate with persons outside their individual stores
- get feedback and suggestions from our customers without the information first going through corporate

Publix should definitely have a blog. People I have met who work or have worked (my wife included) at Publix are their biggest supporters and their best spokespersons. Why not let them have a voice? Individual Publix stores have a sense of community, why not recreate that same connectedness to commuunity online?

I think most (if not all) companies should have a blog (government agencies included). Apparently, some people don't agree. :(

I think I may have unmade the case :-) I am a great spokesperson, just not on this issue.

If they change their offshoring deals, I will be pimping Publix. In fact, I think that in itself will make hiring easy and improve morale greatly. People are flocking to companies that quit offshoring. Much more secure environment.

I would not recommend working for Publix. I worked for Publix for 10 years at corporate. I worked with all of the officers, VP's, etc. Publix is ran by one individual, whom I will add is not interested in associate needs at all. That person held an office as a VP. The one highest office, will never "manage" her, he has no clue how!

Yes Elizabeth, corruption is alive and well at Publix. If serious issues arise at Publix they always seem to be handle by this one VP. She is the self appointed heavy hand at Publix.

Very serious issues are never shared with the highest level executives. She road blocks a lot of the most important associate issues. Nor does she share her resolution with the highest level executives. BIG PROBLEM, that alone will be demise of this corporation. It will happen in time. And this alone makes the Executive Members and Board Members look like fools to most of the upper-middle level associates who really know more about what is going on than they are ever given credit for.

Oh, I can count so many times that she handled issues that should have never stopped at her. Issues that should have been sent to higher levels for resolution. Mr. George must be rolling over in his grave.

Also, don't be fooled by Forbes Best Places to Work awards. All of the companies involved fill out an application and submitted it for the award. The companies with the best applications win. Also as part of the package, a very small amount of associates fill out a rather small survey. The associates who normally fill them out are new associates in the stores, who have not been employed long enough to know about any issues with Publix.

There is a lot at Publix that is strickly for show. Most associates including long time associates would be appauled if they only knew the truths.

I could go on and on. I can tell you things that would rock the whole structure of Publix. But I won't lower myself to their lack of interest in associates. I know many associates and most need their paychecks.

Neveragain,
Sorry to hear about your Pop, but click on the link.

As a former employee of Publix, my opinion of the company is that it has turned directly away from the principles of its founder. Employees are treated poorly at the store level, and they are paid very poorly. For a company to make the money that Publix does in profit and still pay their employees so poorly shows that the company cares nothing for its employees.

Their practice of hiring thousands of part-time associates so that they will not have to pay benefits is attrocious. I am sure founder did not treat his people thusly.

I recently saw a TV report about how Wal-Mart mistreated its employees. In my eyes, Publix is just as bad.

Are all Publix stores run in a gestapo sort of way? It seems that old George would truly turn over in his grave if he saw the way associates are treated. They are written up if they dare work 1 minute of overtime in my store. There are more rules and regulations to follow than the military has. It is almost like a punishment some days to have to work a shift under the pressure and scrutiny of some of the managers. What is going on???? Skeleton crews of 5 are expected to do the work of 15 people, and then told that they aren't fast enough. I see good people have their very spirits broken on a daily basis. Maybe I am just not cut out for this rat race, or then again, maybe they need to get a better grip on the type of management style that is used. Sigh - am I the only one who feels this way? Mary

People who are complaining about Publix really have no idea. If you have a problem with your manager, talk to your store manager. Still a problem? District manager. Still a problem? Contact your division supervisor. Still a problem? Then it's you. Publix pays everyone on their payroll more than they're worth at other companies so it has the power to rid itself of the inferior and attract the superior. That's also the reason we have 6-month raise evaluations while the "industry standard" is annual. That's also the reason why almost all of our managers got there internally. As for paygrade, store managers in my division make a flat 100k plus their four bonuses. That's not poor wages. That's pretty damn high. I work in the Publix Deli and I have no complaints. None. Really. And I was denied my most recent raise. (I deserved that denial. I don't show up on time enough). Superior service, domination through differentiation. They aren't just mottos, they're mantras.

Wow. Some of the lies told on here are astonishing. Part time associates at Publix are eligible for benefits after working 1 year and 1,000 hours during that year (avg 20 hours per week). Most do that. Publix pays their associates better than their competitors. And the person who complained about the female VP? She has no clue what she is talking about. if you call Lakeland and want to speak to Ed Crenshaw or Charlie Jenkins or whomever, you get to speak to them.

I am so fed up with my store, I have been working there almost a year and it seems to be getting worst every week. I have complained to managers and asst. managers and nothing is happening. They tell me everything is being documented and due process but if I did some of the things like not work and stand around, call out if the wind blows wrong, ignore customers or stay in the office on my shift I would get fired in a second. And its not only the management not doing what its supposed to do but co workers also. They say publix is a team effort... not at this store...If you dont do it it wont get done. I truley believe that all managers and asst managers in the store (all departments) should be transfered out and rotated store to store every year (ie. managers in Jan., asst. managers in June) That way they are no clicks and no favorites. Maybe its a start to improve the store and its employees.

we clock in for each other

Believe me I know what its like to be beaten down by Publix... I started up front but moved back to grocery I kinda just did my part nothin more for a while. Then I decided that I wanted to be a manager thats when I stepped up my game. I was the best part time grocery clerk I could out throw full timers that had years exp. Finally I got full time they gave me a whopping 5cent pay raise to 8.00 I bust my ass for a year and a half for them and still only make 8.50 an hour!!! I was great for them in the begining now I get beat down and harrassed everyday saying im not fast enough now or that I didnt do something right.. Now they nit pick everything I do and add a work load that 2 people would struggle to do... Thanks to Publix they also gave me an addiction to ephederin which I managed to kick with the help of a gf.
