The Un-Official Publix Forum

A previous post about Publix Supermarkets titled The Un-Official Publix Blog has become somewhat of an 'Un-Official Publix Forum'. There are currently 16 comments with more coming in each week. The majority of the comments appear to be from Publix associates discussing the pros/cons of working for the the supermarket chain. A sample:

I have worked for both Publix and Winn-Dixie, they don't even compare. Publix takes care of those that want to work!! If your lazy, you'll stay making minimum wage. If you care and work hard, then you are rewarded with more hours and more pay. Name another retailer that pays there PART-TIMERS 4 retail bonuses and a Christmas bonus, plus vacation time. Don't even get me started on how well they take care of there full time associates. Stop complaining, you can't get everything on a silver platter, some things you have to earn.
All I know is that after the stock split. I will have 6 thousand share of stock. This stock was given to me for WORKING at Publix. It has cost me nothing. I know many people who have MORE!

Somehow these employees have found my blog and started the discussion among the comments. In the absence of an official or even an organized un-official forum, people will congregate at third-party locations to discuss issues that are near and dear to them.

Publix is no different than any other Florida employer and clearly treats it's people like disposable resources.

I never worked there, but my father did many years and was made so 'job scared' by Publix's 'redneck' management staff, that he never reported a serious injury that should have been cared for in an emergency room, and subsequent surgery to repair a torn muscle in his arm.

Because it wasn't treated, he's now permanently impaired.

Pop always put in an honest days work - but that was clearly not enough for the greedy, fat f*ucks who run this corrupt, 'privately held' little company - because they openly discourage people from filing 'Workers Compensation' claims when they're injured on the job.

Accidents happen on the job all the time - any reasonable person will agree with that. That's why the State mandates all employers carry Worker's Compensation Insurance.

Unfortunately, those same fat-ass 'managers' who never put in an honest days' work consider that an 'inconvenient truth' and keep a 'list' of who gets hurt and who files a claim against that Worker's Compensation insurance - put in place to care for those workers when they are hurt on the job.

Fortunately for Publix there are so many poor, uneducated imbeciles out there who will just 'do as they're told' and 'not rock the boat' - because it keeps their premiums low.

In the future, expect their stock to fall as new franchises open and the 'younger' people who will eventually replace those older folks will be filing one claim after another EVERY time they get hurt.

What do you females think should have happened to this manager?

1)Fired
2)Demoted to Asst

Publix is a great place to work if you work hard and if you don't like to work look for something else, and that's for everybody.

It's trully a pleasure working for publix!

I've worked for Publix for five years and find Publix to the ultimate in providing a great shopping experience for its customers and a great working experience for its employees. I believe the company bends over backwards to fix any issues that customers bring to its attention and it certaintly rewards and watches out for its employees. I think that it is ridiculous that Publix would be accused of not caring about its associates well being, safety, and care in the event of any accident. The company employs policies all the way from company standard slip resistant shoes that are mandatory and provided freely to protect from simple but dangerous slips and falls, to making it mandatory that any injury of any size be reported by the end of a work shift so that proper medical care can be given if necessary- immediately or in the future. This all after much training is given on safety practices. Publix takes care of its associates, it takes care of work related accidents, and it offers safegaurds such as short and long term dissabilities. It is both the company and the individual responsible for their safety and future well being. I think that Publix does its part. I further more have to say that what kind of company that doesn't care about its associates well being would give full and part time quarterly bonuses, holiday bonuses, and free stock. Free stock, yes, and a lot of it! I have over fifteen thousand dollars worth of stock and haven't bought any of it! This is the same stock that has increased in value 30% annually in the last five years! And what kind of company of this size has a CEO, president, vice presidents, etc. take a yearly salary that midgets the size of other coorporations' officers so that the businesses success and associates success is realizable. All companies have accidents, all good companies have opportunities, and even the best of companies have bitter people that think they deserve something for nothing.

i iam thinking of working at publix as the bag person to make some money i wanted to know how much you make and what do you need to work there and the hours that i get to work

Can anyone tell me where Publix buys their candy called "gummi dinos" (similar to gummy bears, made with fruit juice) I would like to buy it in bulk and need to know who packages it up for them (publix brand candy). thanks in advance for any help you can give me with this...I would like to add them to our gift baskets that we sell, and need to buy in bulk (50 pounds or more !)

how much is starting pay at publix for a cashier???

i think publix is a great plase to work I know I work there for 33 years people dont know what there talking about.

Heres the deal...I went towork for Publix after many years of being a customer. My dad owned a chain of 25 stores in st.louis(National) and i have pretty much worked in every department in grocery stores..Publix was really attractive to me. I have a culinary background and made goals for myself to be in their corporate offices in Florida. The training program which consisted of 2 days (sat and sun) was truely unheard of in this business and they really get you even more excited about the company and how it takes care of its people. Once I made it to my store in Atlanta GA I was thrown into my department and given absolutely zero training.(the operation is huge and so different than ours was) The person I was to be working with would not teach me any part of my job. She was extremely negative and told me"you are fucked" "Nobody here likes you"This just after 2 days on the job. She was truely a head case. I was frustrated and went to a mgr at another store and told him about the lack of traing.Of course I didnt tell him who I was. He said it's not normal and I need to say something to my mgrs.I believe telling them about something wrong with thier operation after just 2 weeks on the job would really screw me. The next day I crushed my wrist in the dairy cooler and now dont have the problem. Not one phone call from management to say hey are you okay?....Not one...So much for caring about your people Publix...I'm so disappointed it fails to compare to any other life experience...I was so excited about working for that company...They have become hugeand havnt brought the companies old values with them..they tried to but the store level managers have become too lazy to care . perhaps they were given too much too quick..MJ
Atlanta GA

The only thing that bothers me about publix is the work till close, then open the next day. They need to put a guidline in their books for something liek this. That and their pay. The new pay system really sucks. Iknow people that have lost money but are really nice and have never had any problems.

I wanted to agree with the story that David m posted above. My brother works for a publix store and was promoted and given 0 training. He has a hard time manageing his staff so he does most of it himself i imagine. He is afraid to call in sick when he is really ill and he works 10-15 hour days. I think some publix stores may be good to work for but others can be poorly managed so it is hard to make a general claim on ALL of Publix, good or bad, I just know that the store my brother is at in FL is HORRIBLE and they do not care about his well being or health. He works really hard but because he is young they take advantage of him and "bully" him. He also has to deal with lazy staff, some whom he is unable to even communicate with because they do not speak english, this makes his job even harder. I HATE publix. Life is too short to have to work your life away and be afraid of your boss.

I read through a lot of blogs in here and I'm sure I can top and argue against everything everyone has said in here... and probably argue their points better than they do... but facts are facts, believe it or not.

1. Publix is a GREAT place to work... if you fit one of 2 categories.

a. you want money and are undereducated.
b. you make friends easily and know how to kiss butt.

I see people talk about "hey, he whines, I'm gonna take my 6000 stock to the bank"... well, that's all good and well, they probably fit category A above. Just because someone isn't treated well, doesn't mean they do not appreciate their pay and benefits. But, is it right for Publix to treat people poorly because they are paying them to stfu? I say no.

I always had fun reading the 'store evaluations' every year. I've never seen so many store managers so happy to have 68%'s and 72%'s in my life... I would have gotten grounded for 'grades' like that.

and management just says... oh, some employees are just 'whiners'... and management, and corporate doesn't learn from what those evaluations are saying. I say, the only reason it isn't LOWER, is because a lot of employees want their store too look good and go bragging to their managers about the raving reviews, so they can get promoted (see category B above)

I have more if you have questions.

I've worked for Publix for a little over a year. My first store SUCKED....management showed favoritism and kept you low on the totem pole as far as hours or pay if they wanted to force you out. My next store had the worst manager in the history of grocery! We banned together, and he was discharged. Publix really does listen to its employees. I've worked for several large retailers, and I'm telling you, they will fire you the minute someone comes in that will do your job for less...even pennies less...with no notice, no remorse. Publix works hard to retain good employees, and will counsel them and work with them as long and as hard as possible. I work very hard at my job, and can see the appreciation. If not, I would be gone. The benefits are AWESOME! Best I've ever had, and it's also one of the few large retailers where they will promote you to management without a college degree.

Not all stores are the same, and undoubtedly, sometimes the promotion without formal education works against them. I'm sure there ARE some undereducated store managers who do not handle employees well, and there are also some well educated ones that are abusive to their employees. This happens in all large retail operations, but Publix addresses the problem IF IT IS REPORTED TO CORPORATE. If you're going to sit on your hands and only complain, nothing will be done.

i have worked with publix for a number of years. and its kind of enjoying at times. however, at one time i was in the customer service desk area, well a manager came in who didnt like me and kicked me out. later she got transfered and the next week i was put back in. now the thing that gets me is that i open my availibility to help out and to get in the office again, and they dont even schedual me but 10 hours. i was better off just staying at 10 - 5 a few days and makeeing my money. i confronted my manager about this and he said that im not availible 3 days......... i was like no crap i go to college so i dont have to work here as an ONLY RESORT. publix does as a whole take care of employees, i have seen it on the coorprate level many times, HOWEVER when the lower managers think that they run the store that becomes a problem. i have seen it all the time something wrong with the schedual poeople getting pissed off ( even managers). the thing that irritates me the most is that the managers feel it is neccessary to cut someone who lives on their own works as much as they can, and cut their hours and think its okay...... thats fed up. there are problems at every job, i have had many jobs since i became able to work and they all have diffrent problems. but with publix which wwas diffrent from other places is that there are about 9 or so managers in the store. and i believe 7 ( it is at my store ) can be mic, when these mic managers are not mic they still make the rules like they are in mic, yet the other mic doesnt want it done like this or that, so then you have 7 managers pissed and then 40 employees confused as hell and get introuble because they dont know what the hell to do. but yea i talked to my manager about my 10 hrs and he said well its the computers fault..... then went on to say that well if he took off this day and this time he wouldnt bee manager.......... IM NOT IM PART TIME. publix is a good place to work but once you give the managers part of your life, like 35 hours a week diuring school and other crap, they want more, then when you decline and tell them you are cutting your hours or transfering they give you hell, and like omg we neeedd you, yet at my store my manager only gives a crap about under employing every day so he can get a fater bonus. but thats not fair to everyone else. the only word that summarizes the problems with publix is MICROMANAGERS. most store mnanagers and definantly higher know how to treat everyone, not every manager gets treated fairly just like not every employee is, it does go to the top but alot of work needs to be done.

To Susan... I did report things to corporate... all the way up to Bob Moore. Unfortunately, the District Manager went to them first to talk about the 'farce' that they consider me, cause they didn't want my word to affect their paycheck. I had fellow employees that backed me up... didn't matter, they sent me to the DM, who is who we were trying to talk about... they didn't care.

I could get specific...

I've worked Deli Department for almost 2 years. I've worked in 2 stores, and helped in another a few days. I've been part time until about 3 months ago. To deal with every argument against Publix I'll say this: Each store is different.
At my store (Store 463 Woodstock, GA) things aren't too bad. Full time was a pain to get because of this and that, I REALLY had to earn it. That's how it works around here with Publix, you have to earn what you want. If you don't like your hours and pay, keep asking for change, go to the DM if you can't get it settled with your manager or the store manager. That's Publix's Open Door Policy.
And they do listen, most managers want to help you get better. But do remember these are humans we're talking about, each is different so don't expect robots to give you what you want. But here's an example of how things can be done.
I'm on what's known as the AVS Team, which is a group of representatives from different departments who get together to discuss change. Using suggestions from my co-workers I've so far gotten several things fixed, replaced, better training, a good amount of things and I'll have more next month. I'm not management, hell, I was put on the team as a part timer. But they do listen to somebody who will speak up. If you're somebody who is just there for a paycheck, get it and go home or to another job. If you're there for a paycheck but also to help Publix continue their reputation as a good shopping experience, they will be very happy to help you with your problems.
Overall, Publix is a good place to work for, if you want to work.

I just applied to work at Publix because I need a job to pay student loans. I am starting tech school and I want to know if publix works with you when you let them know in advance that you are a full time student.

Hi, I want to apply at publix, anybody know how the INTERVIEW process goes, what basic questions do they ask you? Thanks.

I came back to work for the bakery after ten years. I was hired p/t which i was told was up to 32 hours but I was told I wouldnt get less than 25.. That was bad enough. After I was done training i was only getting two days 7 hours.. I asked whay and the bakery manager said thats all he needs me for. Thats not what I was told and should have been before I took the job. Six months later a new manager comes and takes those measley hours I cant live on away and gives me eleven?? Thats crap.. I was promised my crappy two days and was told they would NEVER be less but may or may not be more. Than this guy comes and gives me less.. I am a grown woman providing for myself and I am begging family and friends for money every month to keep electric on water on and gas in my car.. I have to be on FS which is so humiliating.. This company isnt right.

I can remember when Publix was a respected employer. Now, they are "just another retailer."I came across an article about them reducing pay based on performance. This screams "discrimination" toward older workers who probably can't perform a job @45y.o as fast as they did it @ 25y.o. Would love to see these older workers class action Publix the way women and minorities did several years ago!

I just recently left Publix(489) panama city beach . And i want everyone to know that i was one to never want to work, i hated it, but then i started working in the deli at 489, and low and behold i loved it. You know there are always bad days but come on Publix does care for its associates. i have never cried as much as i did when my husband and i left, there was so much love from everyone upper and lower managment. My manager michelle and her asst. joshy poo were the best.Anyone who wants to work for Publix give it a try just be sure that you WANT to WORK.

how much is the starting salary for pharmacy techs

Publix is a great company and it treats its employees as great as it does with its costumers , no wonder Publix has been Voted one of the best companies to work for 10 years in a row. If U want to work U will be reward and if U don't just like any other employer U will be gone in no time. Great stocks and 401(k), it does not get any better then that.

Tim

I always thought if I worked at Publix, I would be home.

I am a cake decorator, view my work at www.freewebs.com/annascakeart . I applied and was hired and then I sliced bread and passed out free cookies. No cake decorating.

That's fine. I like bread, too.

After a while it got old and I asked for a leave of absence.

Ok, still fine.

Then I get a call from the manager, they are opening a new store, and I am thinking 'GREAT, I'm in', but the bakery is like the red-headed step child. Unrealistic expectations on minimal man hours.

Daily I witnessed managers and assistant managers coming to work off the clock to make their dept look good. Working 15 plus hours a day but only clocking in for 10 or 11 of those hours. I also (with my own eyes) saw bread mixers punch out on fridays when their 40 hours were up and then go back and finish their work. Evey Week working hours off the clock.

So I am not one to say nothing and I explained that as long as people are working off the clock it will give upper management the impression that we can run this department with the man hours allotted.

On deaf ears.

I left Publix, gave my two weeks, worked till the last scheduled day, because I knew if I ever needed to I would go back.

Guess what?

I am back.

Same store, different management, same exact shit. Maybe worse.

During my first month back, a customer commented that I was a little to cheerful, "You must be a new employee" She said, "That smile won't last"
I vowed at that moment that when I can no longer greet people with a smile and a kind word, I'm outta here.

Hi Florida hard workers, from my 12 years of experience, If you truely work hard, and dedicate yourself to publix, you will need to make personal changes. Publix is a spirit breaker. You will be put in situations that are catch22 on a regular basis. You may find that the harder you work, and the more you try to improve, the tighter your situation will become. Publix is big on playing games. Hard work and effort will not advance you. Personality is key. You will need to sell out your morals and think of your co workers as numbers. Be prepared to count on nothing but a pay check. The personalities you will encounter will be unbelivable. If you decide to leave the company years later, you will leave without skills. Your reputation at publix means nothing to other employers. Please continue your education, and aquire skills and a diploma. It may seem hard to grasp, especially when publix seems like a solid carrer path but, education means everything, if you decide to leave.

Silly,

Sounds like your just another dead beat ( and I mean that in a gentle way) obviously your ignorance and bitterness has gotten you on hear to complain about something that is false only to show that U could either not handle working for the company because its to difficult for U to do your job or U are just to lazy to work and prefer living on welfare. As far as Education only if U want to waist the rest of your life going to school to only realize there is a lot of good jobs like Publix were U don't need College and still make good money and get a good retirement and such only does that are fools will be in school for half of there life's start there career late retired when they are very old and live the rest of there life's with no retirement money only to depend on the little the government gives U, in today's society everyone works ALOT because the economy is screwed up and everything is getting more expensive, so don't tell me that U have to work to hard or to much at Publix because that is not true. You get more skill working here then u do going to college and siting in a class room to only waist your money or time, that's why so many people don't even know what they want to do and end up changing careers or classes.

Hi mike, you sure your name isn't Tim? You misunderstood my post. I was not claiming I work to hard. Read my post again silly ass.

Mike, one more thing, I really like it when you talk gently, oooooooooh

According to my name witch is located on the BOTTOM RIGHT hand side it clearly reads "Mike". It's okay if U cant comprehend something that simple. The gentle statement was sarcasm.

Hi mike (timmothy), Dont get upset over names, your just a number###############. You realy have't figured that out yet?

Hi my name is Howard Perch, I live in Palm Coast 437-6442. I think publix associates do a terrible job. You people need to get your act together. Especially in grocery! The cakes in the bakery look like they're done by a 2 year old. YOU GUYES NEED TO GET THE HAMMER DOWN!! As retired floridians from up north, we DESERVE better service!!!!!!!

H.Perch U sound pretty immature coming in here bashing Publix associates. U obviously have no clue to what U are talking about, and I suggest U find some new hobbies.
