Throwback URL T-Shirts

Throwback jerseys from designers like Mitchell & Ness have been all the rage with the sports set (or the wannabe sports set) for some time now, but how about some gear for geeks?

Nothing says 'I was hip before the web was' like a throwback URL t-shirt. The first shirt I'd come out with would be: http://akebono.stanford.edu/:

throwbackURL.jpg

For those of you that don't know, that was the original address for Yahoo. I can remember it so clearly, using my Telnet account and Lynx to visit the pre .com version of yahoo.

Like all other throwback gear we'll do a limited run and jack the price way up....say $120 per t-shirt. The question for you is what are some other throwback URLs? Remember altavista.digital.com?

Sadly, I do remember AltaVista's old URL. And when Digital was the bomb!

How about anything with gopher:// in it :-)

I think UCF's was gopher://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu What better way to show your geek cred and support your alma matter?

I'm sure there is a rights issue with this, but I would love to have a T-shirt with the Spyglass Mosaic logo.

I might be slightly younger than you guys so I can't say I remember many old URL's. But I think it's worth saying that I laughed out loud when I read this post. I do remember the gopher:// that Chris commented about. That was way back, I might have been 13 or 14 years old. It was interested reading this post because I had no idea about Yahoo!'s roots, or any other site for that matter. I was just thinking the other day about what companies did before high speed internet. I remember have a 28.8kb dial-up connection through Mindspring. That was my first internet connection and it was fast because all my friends had 14.4kb modems. We've come so far in the past decade and to be quite frank, it scares me to think of what will be going on in another 10 years. Thanks for this reminder of our roots in the online world.

I laughed out loud when I read this post. It certainly brought back memories. I remember our utility's very first URL - http://sun6.dms.state.FL.us/kua. It just doesn't roll off the tongue quite like www.kua.com. In those days, the state of Florida served as Web host for municipal governments. My how things have change!

I used to WORK at Digital (or "DEC" as we called it) and we thought it was the bomb too. We used to go on amazing training courses that had *nothing* to do with our daily job; we weren't allowed to use any Microsoft products, so had to manage with DEC's own dtp layout and spreadsheet software; we had the world's largest private telephone network; we had a humungous bbs on every topic imaginable inside the firewall... ahhh, those were the days!

How many of you had a bang address? How many of you remember your bang path? I had a few, but I think the longest lived was probably uunet!cendata!bif!richardm, IIRC. I had a bang address on the old sdf.lonestar.org system also back when it was just had a UUCP feed.

T-shirt with the Spyglass Mosaic logo. :)
