Orlando TV Station Running MySpace Sting?

Update: Roger has posted a new item....the two profiles in question now list their real ages.

Roger Simmons from Orlando wonders if one of the local TV stations is attempting to run a sting operation via MySpace.com:

I received an e-mail late last week saying to check out two postings on the popular site MySpace.com.

The first link was to a 15-year-old girl named Jessica who lives in Orlando. The second link was to another girl named "Lady J," this one saying she is 15, lives in Orlando and "If it weren't for Myspace I'd have no friends."

What's interesting is the "girls" in the photos look very, very similar to WKMG reporters Jessica D'Onofrio and Jessica Sanchez.

So, is this a hoax, a prank ... or possibly part of a Local 6 sweeps story trying to find out if anyone will attempt to pick up these "underage" girls? You decide.

When you compare the pictures there is quite a resemblance. The MySpace Jessica on the left claims to be only 15 years old. The one on the right is Local 6 reporter Jessica D'Onofrio.

Of course there are two other options: 1. It's a bunch of 15 year-old kids that have created the pages 2. The reporters are actually 15, in that case Local 6 is probably violating some child labor laws.

First of all, let me just say that myspace.com is a very creepy and sketchy website and I can tell you why I feel this way. An aspect of myspace.com is that you can add or post any kind of music on your webpage that you want. A friend of mine who writes and plays his own music signed up on myspace.com and created a page with his music on it in order for another way to put his name out there more and share his music more with others. Well he told me that he did this and I was interested in seeing his page, but the only way I could was if I signed up so I did.
Literally, the next day I got messages from complete strangers seeing if I wanted to "network" or "chat" with them. Some of the messages said that they had read my profile and were really interested in me! This really made me feel uncomfortable and I now rarely go on myspace.com.
Anyway, I can see both sides of your story. One, I could see it being a bunch of 15 year-olds, maybe even older than that since like I said myspace.com is kind of weird, messing around or putting up pictures where they know they'll get attention. On the other hand, because of today's technology and all the crazy people out there, I again wouldn’t be surprised if this was a trick and the television station was trying to see what type of reaction will occur. I don’t think that these reporters are actually 15, not only because the actual picture of the reporter doesn't look 15, but also because myspace.com is all about networking and has a bad reputation for its consumers to post pictures other than themselves.
In any case, I would just be careful of myspace.com.

I agree with Nicole in the fact that myspace.com is very sketchy. It is even potentially dangerous. They had to make a rule recently prohibiting pornography on people's profiles. With that being said, I think it's hilarious that this news company decided to try and catch people picking up underage girls. Of course it's going to happen if the predators don't catch on to what's going on. I'm interested to find out where this story goes. I'm going to try and follow along on myspace. Thanks for the post.

A television station pulls off a stunt just to boost viewship? Impossible! The very thought of it shocks me and threatens the integrity that local news channels now enjoy. NOT.

Interesting. Just clicked on the links to the Jessica and Jessica's pages on myspace and they have been taken down. Guess the sting is over.

I guess we'll need to watch Local 6 to see the story :-)

Okay, I know Jessica D'Onofrio and she is not 15. Both pictures are of Jessica D'Onofrio, the one on the left a little older. Someone is obviously using it to impress others on myspace.com, which is a really weird website that people should be very careful with.

A friend just linked me to this blog, and you people are just as crazy as everyone else. I don't know where to start. At least you posted an update that stated my first thoughts when I was reading this. They lied about their ages. *gasp* A woman lied about her age?!

There was no sting. It wasn't a ratings ploy. MySpace is not a website, it's a webnetwork. And you can't say something about the entire network simply for a small portion of its users. The people on it are really no more creepy than people in the real world. You just encounter so many more of them so more quickly. Like Nicole saying she had 2000 new messages in a day. Yeah, that's a shitty result of the "Cool New People" feature MySpace has. But if you think about it, it's like walking down a busy street /sidewalk of 60,000 people and 2 of them saying hi to you because it was your first day to walk down that street.

Notice the 2 profiles are now gone. They likely listed their ages so low to be private so they wouldn't get near as much junk messages. Then it got thrown on a blog with conspiracy theories and they likely got so much response (likely many hateful ones) to it that they had to delete their profiles. Basically, their actions of wanting to be left alone by people they don't know had the opposite results. I'm saying the next time you try to "report" information, actually have some.

MySpace has always had a no nudity policy, it wasn't a recent change. And they're pretty strict to enforce it. But it's pretty difficult to get it all when there are 50 million pages to check constantly. And it started out as mandatory 18 and up. That used to be a really nice thing about MySpace. Now there are freaking Jr High kids on there listing themselves as 99 or 100 years old.

I use MySpace to keep an unimportant blog that's random rantings that my friends occasionally read and we laugh about it. Of course anyone is free to read it and comment on it. Just don't take it too seriously while reading. But I've had a profile up on there for a year and a half. It used to be all obviously false information and a big joke. I've met a few random interesting people and many more annoying ones (like fags offering... um, stuff). It's the same as the rest of the internet which is the same as the real world. It's for the most part normal people, but the idiots and psychos stand out. That's why so many programs have a block or ignore feature, learn to use it.
