Over at GigaOM Jackson West blogs about the new trend in office space, the coffee shop. It's always good to see articles like this, especially since I can send them to people who think I am crazy when I tell them where I work :-)
Of course it takes a little time for trends on the West Coast to make it to Central Florida.

Jim Romenesko produces a blog from a Starbucks in Chicao that's a must-read in media circles. It's at http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=45. He's such a Starbucks aficionado that he has a separate blog for Starbucks gossip: http://starbucksgossip.typepad.com

I love this. Sometimes i feel like the only loser that sets up for work at a coffee shop. I read most of the article that you linked to. It is so true that with the "laptop generation" coming in, more and more coffee shops will be the place for meetings and office space. It only costs me $1.78 a day for my office space. And since I only sit there to work only a few times a week, we're talking only a few dollars a month for "office rent." It's a beautiful concept, my own "secretary" to refill my cup and make sure my stomach is full and the temperature is just right. Friends are always dropping by "the office" to make sure everything is ok. My "secretary" even gives me a coffee mug if I desire it, no paper cups here. It's a beautiful thing. Oh, and did I mention that wireless Internet is free, even if I'm not in the mood for coffee, but just want to sit with a cup of water? The one drawback that there aren't quite enough outlets. Well, the truth is that there are plenty, but the tables are spaced just right that if you're at the middle table, you can't reach and outlet. All-in-all, it's a great office. Just put in the headphones to drown out the terrible house music, and suddenly I disappear into my work and get all my tasks accomplished. Well, that's all my stories about the office...and please, nobody tell Shannon that I referred to him as my "secretary." That could lead to a sudden eviction from the office space.

Funny, we're doing this as students too. Obviously there would be more of this going on in a university setting purely because students can afford to be a little more laidback about the way in which we get our work done, but the coffee shop library trend seems to be happening at the same time as the coffee shop office.
Now that there's wireless Internet in the local cafe, we can have our group meetings there and be able to collaborate out loud and be vocal about what we're trying to accomplish without the worry of disturbing the entire library.
I'm hoping that the meeting in the coffee shop for work movement will hold on another few months until I graduate so the transition from one type of work to another won't be so harsh. I love that the PR field (and the other surrounding fields we deal with) is a creative enough environment to allow for the occasional field trip. I love field trips!
