Something Wrong With Match.com's Numbers

Driving home last night I heard one of the new Match.com radio commercials. Just one problem with the commercial: Fuzzy Math.

The voice-over states, "There are now over 15 million reasons for you to join Match.com" or something like that. It goes on to say that by joining you'll be able to choose from these 15 million Match.com members for your next date. Wrong.

Let's assume that the gender breakdown of Match.com members is 50/50. Wouldn't most people only be able to choose from 7.5 million members? Even if you were gay/lesbian you'd theoretically still only have 7.5 million members to choose from. I guess Match.com assumes that we're all bisexual.

I love how blatant mistakes like that get approved to go on the air. Is it mean-spirited that I find it funny?

Not only does it assume bisexuality, it also assumes that we are all willing to travel great distances for a blind date.

Shel, what's a few thousand miles when love is in the air :-)

Guess they really believe love is blind?!

I guess they're assuming most people just don't pay enough attention. I have the radio on right now on iTunes, and I can't tell you a single commercial I heard this morning.

Just playing devil's advocate, Josh. Let's say you're interested in women. There are 7.5 million of them. But very few of them would be there if there weren't millions of available men on Match.com. So even if you're not interested in one gender, they contribute to the site, and to your interests, by attracting millions of the gender you're pursuing. Viewed that way, the 15 million number isn't necessarily wrong.

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

I live in Holland, were only 15 million people live!

Well, we would also have to have on standby airplanes, psychologists, and viagra to date even 7.5 million members. I've found it's hard to find one normal person on match.com and I've been on and off of it for over three years. SUre plenty of dates- with losers.

I agree with numbers not adding up. Yet, I think match.com is ahead of the others. In my perception match.com has a greater number of features and searching capabilities. Also, now Dr. Phil is getting involved with Match.com, I think match.com would win the online date service poll.

Yeah, well, the site's been down all afternoon. This is what I'm paying for? Not even accessable site?
