I went ahead and ordered the Nikon D80 the other day. Indications is that it will ship sometime in September.

My dream set-up is the D80 paired with the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens. All the reviews say the 18-200mm is a dream and a great single lens solution. But the lens is pricey. So I need to wait on that a little bit. With that I ordered the D80 with a basic kit lens (18-55mm) with hopes of buying the bigger lens as soon as possible.
Of course I'll be posting when the new gear arrives.
Update: Turns out that Ritz Camera has the D80 in stock now, I just ordered one and I am supposed to receive it on Wednesday (9/6). I still haven't canceled my Amazon order, but they still say their expected delivery date is Nov 13.

It's all about the lens isn't it? There are several other options, the best group discussion is the Flickr Nikon D50 Users. There is ample discussion on lens and you can have fun till you migrate up.

Seems there are a lot of seemingly reputable internet dealers that are selling "grey" market D80's - or are selling the body only then charge substantially more for those items included in the retail "kit" by Nikon. Suggest extreme caution when ordering if the price is more than $50 less than the 999.99 MSRP.
