Michael Eisenberg wonders if/why the AP would edit a quote by Tony Dungy? If you remember Tony mentioned the Lord quite a few times during his trophy presentation speech. In an AP recap of the Super Bowl, this is the quote attributed to Tony.
"I'm so proud of our guys," Dungy said. "We took the hit early with Devin Hester. We talked about it; it's going to be a storm. Sometimes you have to work for it. Our guys played so hard and I can't tell you how proud I am of our group, our organization and our city."Michael is asking that if you have a copy of the interview/quote on Tivo or another DVR that you check it out. However, to give AP some benefit of the doubt, perhaps Tony talked again about the Hester run-back in a later interview and used the quote listed above. Reading the AP article it's not clear when Tony gave that quote.

Actually, that quote sounds like it's verbatim from the presentation. Jim Nantz followed up, asking him about being the first African-American coach to win and he said something along the lines of:
I'm proud to represent the African-American community. ... It shows that African-American coaches, Christian coaches can win by doing it the Lord's way.
I'm almost positive that was the only reference to God during the CBS portion of the post-game celebration. I did not record the game, so this is from memory, but I remember because we were talking about his devotion and faith. One at our party was surprised he didn't thank God at first, but we pointed out that he often leaves his faith out of football talk.
I could be wrong about this, but I think AP got the quote right.

You are right. I found it on CBS.
Sometimes the Lord doesn't doesn't bring you straight through... was taken out of that quote.

It was edited, for sure. I was hanging on every word!
He did say "God", not "Lord" who does not always bring you straight through, however. I remember because I made a mental note, thinking perhaps he was covering bases for non-Christians in the organization.
Excellent catch, Josh!

This started with the AFC Championship and lead-up to the Super Bowl. Dungy made similar comments after the AFC Championships and I commented that they were edited by the evening news that night.

This was the first Super Bowl with 2 black coaches and 2 devout Christian coaches. It's no surprise it never made the headlines.
