I've been looking at getting a small external drive for my PowerBook to store some photos. Are those self-powered USB drives any good? I've been debating between one of SmartDisk's tiny, Firewire-powered drives or one of the USB 2.0 models. Anybody have any suggestions?

Josh, I have had a SmarkDisk FireLite for my old G3 Powerbook for a while, as a backup. The advantage, besides small size, is the speed of the Firewire over USB. (For while, even ran OSX off it, since the G3 has all of 6 GB hard drive.) Still, I have found the FireLite can be slow to wake up and, since mine is Firewire only, it is disadvantage if for some reason you need to use it with a USB only computer. JC

I use the SmartDisk for backup and it works great.

You may want to check out the lacie clearance rack at: http://www.lacie.com/products/clearance/products/?id=10007
They tend to have a nice selection of mobile drives (including the rugged-ized version) at a steep discount.

I'll give another plug to the LaCie products. Been using them for years and quite happy.

Josh.. I have a Smartdisk Firelite drive and it won't power up by itself via USB on the Powerbook. They ship it with an external power cord but its an extra peice you have to carry if you want to use it with the Powerbook. It works great on the powermac or imacs though with no extra power source.
