During Paul Gillin's session...from Tom Foremski (paraphrasing):
What's kiiling the revenue stream for newspapers is search engine marketing and not really blogs or social media. It's easier to sell shampoo via a search result than an ad next to journalism.

Thanks for the mention Josh and it was great chatting with you in Las Vegas...the full quote was along the lines of: "it is easier to sell shampoo next to a search result than next to journalism about beheadings in Iraq."
It is an extreme example, and one I've used many times in different places, to bring attention to a serious issue that journalism is a far less effective vehicle for carrying advertising messages than search results. Therefore how will we pay for journalism as a society? What will be the new value recovery mechanism for journalism? We will go through a painful time until we figure this out.

Interesting quote Josh. Craigslist.org has played a big part in bringing down revenues for many newspaper classifieds. I live in Boston, I use both craigslist.org and Boston.com. Even though I lived in the bay area and have been using craiglist since the 90's
