NetFlix or Blockbuster Total Access?

I've been debating on whether I should sign-up for NetFlix or Blockbuster Total Access. I'm torn.

I was one of the original NetFlix customers from many years ago, back when they only had one distribution center and those of use on the right side of the country had to wait days for DVDs. Today, NetFlix has a distribution center in Lakeland, FL, less than 25 miles from my home.

However, Blockbuster has the in-store drop-off/pick-up thing which can help with impulse rentals. But then again I have never liked Blockbuster as a company :-)

Who do you use for your online DVD rental? Have any of you tried both services? Have an opinion you'd like to share?

I use Netflix, but I have a Blockbuster card for impulse rentals. Sometimes you want to run to the store and get something, but that's an exception for me, so I feel no need to be on a plan with them.

Netflix has such a great selection of hard to find films that I think it's no contest.

(The last time I was in the Blockbuster store, they tried to sell me on the plan - "It's more convenient, you don't have to mail things, you can come here!" My response: "My mailbox is much closer that this store!")

I signed up with Blockbuster for a while but I didn't like them sending me movies from my "list." In other words, they kept a list of what I wanted to see but only sent me what was available at the time, so if I wanted to see a particular movie on a particular weekend, I was out of luck unless I went down to the store and got it. But having to go to the store was what the service was supposed to eliminate. I cancelled very quickly.

We use Netflix. Sadly, the monthly fee for two movies is often wasted when we don't get around to watching them in a timely manner. Other than that, we've been pleased with Netflix. I have fun re-ordering the queue but that's because I'm obsessive compulsive. If you pick Netflix, let me know so I can add you to my "Friends" and you can see what terrible, horrible movies I pick (if you ask Christian).

We're big Netflix fans. We considered Blockbuster's plan and have just found Netflix so pleasant to deal with, we don't think we'll ever change. In the last year we've gotten my husband's grandparents, in their eighties, and my parents, in their seventies, to start using Netflix and they love it.

I'll cast another vote for Netflix. I did consider the Blockbuster program, but after my last trip there, fiending for a rental with both of my current Netflix movies watched, I realized there wasn't anything in the store I could stomach. However, if you enjoy Mandy Moore flicks and the last few seasons of the OC you should totally go with Blockbuster.

We switched to Blockbuster during their beta and have been pleased with the service since. Like you, I was a subscriber to NetFlix since they launched but the Blockbuster deal of swapping out movies in the store is what keeps us on their service. You also get a couple of free in-store rentals a month in addition to whatever is in your plan, which is also a nice benefit.

If you hate the whole store thing, then stay on NetFlix. Otherwise, I'd recommend Blockbuster.

Netflix evangelist here. I love how correctly things work with their service. The emails that you receive are non-intrusive and are very easy to provide the desired information. Their rating system seems to work extremely well. It is very rare to have a delay on a movie.

I have had Netflix for about a year, and I have had one delay. This was the only bad experience that I had. I don't think they handle this process correctly.

My business partner has Total Access. One huge advantage is the way you can instantly swap movies out at the store. We were heading out of town on a business trip and very easily took his mailed movies to the store and stocked up for the trip.

That wasn't enough to get me away from Netflix's overall experience, though.

I was an original Netflix customer as well. I canceled when they shot their rates through the roof.

Similarly, my brother and good friend both were netflix customers for quite some time. I would consider them to be "above average" type users. My friend switched about 2 months back while my brother switched closer to 4 or 5.

Both of them have done nothing less than RAVE about how happy they are with Blockbuster. Their comments are both similar:

-they love the in-store features to fill that "instant gratification" gap.

-My friend likes the free video game rental

-They both feel they get way more rentals than they ever did with netflix

-They both feel that the website lacks up against Netflix, but they are fairly rapidly adding the features they had come to love on netflix, like sharing queues with friends and family.

And that's the skinny on what I've heard. If I do start watching movies again, I'll certainly be going with Blockbuster.

Definitely Netflix. My life with two little kids is too hectic to add trips to a Blockbuster store and long lines. Even when the lines are short, I still end up waiting forever. Though I have kept a Blockbuster card for stocking up during one major holiday a year. I also like Netflix’s variety of plans and I really like that I can plan ahead by setting up a que rather than trying to remember what movies I want to see at crunch time. Every once in a while we watch a pay-per-view, but the selection is limited – especially in the family-friendly area.

Its amazing how torn people are between these two. Ever since Blockbuster went with the "total access" plan, I haven't even thought about switching over to netflix. I pass blockbuster every day to/from work, so taking the movie back instore isn't really an issue. The best thing that I don't think has been mentioned yet is that when you return a mail in rental in-store, the next movie in your queue is mailed out that day (or the next if you return it in the evening). So, I get one in-store rental as well as my next movie in usually 1-2 business days.

I just wish they were linked up with the stores so that it removed movies from your queue that you rent in-store! Nothing worse than the email saying "Movie A has been shipped" when you just watched it the night before!

Definetly Blockbuster, buster! It's is a more economical decision. I've used BB since they started and love the option to go to the store to get more movies than what I actually pay for!

I've used Blockbuster Total Access $9.99 plan for 8 months. Blockbuster Total Access is superior to Netflix. In addition to returning by mail, you have the option to return in-store in exchange for another movie, which means more rentals per month.

More movies per month than Netflix, same price. Blockbuster is the winner.

P.S. I watch a lot of foreign and indie movies and Netflix does have a bigger selection.

Netflix used to have the better website, but Blockbuster has really caught up. I'd say unless you have an entertainment system that can take advantage of Netflix Watch Now, Blockbuster Total Access with its in-store returns is a better option for most.

In Montana the Blockbuster stores are in the major cities so I'm stuck with the mail-only option.

Netflix is much faster; clearly beating the snot out of Blockbuster in turnaround. I often receive DVDs the same day when BB does send but I''ve already received and sent NF back, received, send back, then BB finally arrives the on the third set of NF. At the end of the month I have received 20 from BB and 30 from NF. I get three deliveries from NF that it takes BB to do 2. I think I'm going to drop BB pretty soon; it almost seems like they're drawing you to go to their store instead. That wouldn't be a bad thing except that the closest one is 46 miles from me.

All the best folks,... Happy New Year!!

I think it depends on whether you have a blockbuster store near you. I've had service with them both.I've gotten very irritated about the long waits at NF for new releases and some non-new releases. This is due to their large customer base. I've read many many posts complaining about that. Blockbuster allows you to return movies to the store and get free rentals in exchange (number per month depends on your subscription plan)These exchanges do not affect the movies you are sent in the mail, they are in addition to that. Wait times for new releases at BB were much less than NF in my experience, and if I did get tired of waiting I usually could get hold of that new release when I made my instore exchanges. Now if getting new releases quickly is not your thing and you want the largest library to choose from, then that would be NF. Though I've never had trouble finding a movie I want at either site, if your someone who has seen almost everything out there and need a bigger selection you'll like NF. Also if you want a community to share your likes and dislikes of movies NF provides that(not my thing, I hardly find time to watch the movies) All in all I prefer BB.
