Last week I was conducting a training session for a group of journalists from across the U.S. During the course of the session we talked about how blogs allow journalists to create their own brand and build loyalty among their readership.
One of the blogs we looked at as an example was Pop Candy by Whitney Matheson from USAToday. Whitney's blog is a great mixture of her personality and reporting.
I threw the question out there to the audience, "Do you think that Whitney needs USAToday anymore?" Most of the journalists in the audience didn't think so.
What do you think?

nope. she doesn't need them. A few things. I love her blog - it appeals to a big cross-section. I was turned on to her by of all people my older sister. I've since turned on a few friends.
And...if she went solo, she could go full feeds, too! ;)

Her brand does not need them to draw traffic and conversation. But she needs SOMEONE to sign checks. Does she want to strike out and make that happen on her own? She should talk to Foremski.
I suspect we'll see more of this however. A semi-related example is B2.0's online editor defecting to Valleywag.

Here's another question, a reporter blog breaks news that a reporter is leaving a mainstream media outlet for a blog. How much of that do we see reflected in Media Map database and how quickly?
If the folks at CISION want to stay relevant, they're going to need to pay attention to the granular level of detail we can find on reporters through social media. A search of blogs, twitter, flickr, youtube and social networks like facebook and linkedin will yield more personal information on a reporter than you ever see on MediaMap.

Turned the above comment into a post and, appropriately enough, used a Hyku pic to illustrate.
Thanks!
