I've been debating about getting EVDO service for some time now, but which one? While I am a Cingular/AT&T customer, their data network is sloooow. The obvious choice seems to be between Verizon and Sprint.
I asked some folks a while back and one of the main considerations was coverage. Well, in my area they are equal. Verizon and Sprint both have the major areas of Florida covered pretty well. I am a Mac user so that factors slightly into which card I might purchase, but I'm mostly concerned about speed and general ease of use.
Which one then, Sprint or Verizon?

Go with sprint. They don't limit your EVDO bandwidth or amount of data transferred. Justin.TV uses sprint because verizon secretly caps how much data you can transfer.

In addition to what Adam notes, I decided on Sprint for their pricing. Their Mac-supported cards are comparable to Verizon's.

I have had the Verizon EVDO card for several years now. I've never had a hardware or software problem, and the reception has been excellent in almost every location where I have attempted to connect. That's my two cents worth...

I haven't had any problems with Verizon, including with bandwidth capping, even though I travel every week and frequently stream video. I have no experience with Spring, but I have only positive things to say about Verizon EVDO

I work for 3Gstore.com so my opinion is biased...
I'm not sure what Chris Scott is referring to. I take calls DAILY from Mac users who cannot find any support from Sprint.
Most every card shipped by Sprint requires activation using Sprint's connection manager which does not run on Macs. Only 2 exceptions are the sierra products.
Requiring activation in a windows machine is hardly what i'd call mac friendly.
Mac users are constantly amazed that we support the sprint devices in far more macs than sprint has ever even heard of. (go ahead and call sprint and ask if they have anything that works in an eMac. that will be a fun phone call.)
If you want true mac support with any/every sprint device... i'd suggest you get device and service from the EVDO + Mac Experts at http://3GStore.com

I use a MacBook Pro 17" and a (Sprint) Novatel USB Ovation 720. Quick disclaimer: I work for Sprint, and my job involves supporting the EvDO network.
Our speeds are fast. Competetive intelligence tells us we are the fastest right now. That might change over time as Verizon continues to roll-out enhancements, but right now we do have a speed edge as well as unlimited bandwidth on the all you can eat data plan. Our prices are reasonable and we do support mac (finally). In fact, we use macbook pros to support the network, so we are versed in just how critical mac support is.
In my opinion, the best device for mac users is the Sierra USB device (I think it is the 595U). While I haven't used it myself, I know it can be activated without using a Windows PC, and I've witnessed its EvDO rev A performance and it really does shine.
Obviously, you'll need to take this post with a grain of salt since I work for Sprint, but that is my honest recommendation. I certainly wouldn't have made the same recommendation this time last year when my team was hacking .kext files on our (then) Powerbooks to get them to recognize our devices and map them to similar drivers for other carriers' cards!
Also, for what it's worth, we (Sprint) watch as many forums as we can for feedback from tech-saavy users. It is far more detailed and useful than exit interviews!!
Good Luck!

Three years ago I purchased the Verizon VZ card and within 12 hours was banned as a spammer. Seems someone jumped on my connection and put me out of business. The local Verizon store staff were not sympathetic nor helpful when I returned it the next day. Maybe the problem has been corrected. My Sprint card works like a charm everywhere I go. The speed is great and it makes me wonder why I have all this hardware, Cat-5 wiring in my home office...

I've had VZW EV-DO service for 1 year this month. It's fantastic all the way around. At one point late last year, they began upgrading the network hardware to rev-a and I actually noticed faster connect speeds and less latency. I love unexpected upgrades.
I recommend VZW highly.
