24 hours after my last update, I still don't have a working iPhone. I called AT&T and they said everything is provisioned correctly and that I just need to wait for the phone to activate.
However, I was told that activations are running anywhere between 24 and 48 hours behind. Great.

I feel for you. Do the iPod and PDA functions work without activation?

What a drag. I would be really frustrated in your shoes.
Has anyone seen any figures on what percentage of iPhone customers are having these problems? There's a lot of anecdotal stuff out there, but of course we're hearing nothing from those who have no problems, who are presumably running around today calling everyone they know to shout, "I have an iPhone! Whee!"
The danger of a hyped product launch that depends on background processes like this is that it's likely that something will go wrong for some people. I hope this doesn't sound uncharitable, but anybody buying a five-minute-old product that relies on a process that's going live for the first time that day needs to be a bit patient, I think.
I do think that the decision to send people home with unactivated phones was a bad one, though. Being told that things are backed up and you should come back tomorrow and pick up your working phone is, of course, unsatisfying... but probably better than what's happened for you and others.

Nothing on the phone works till it's activated.

Well, if misery loves company, then count me in.
