There is ‘Influence’ and Then There is ‘Influence’
We’ve all heard about these ‘new influencers’ you know the social media gurus that have 15,000, 30,000 followers. Or those big-boys with 100,000 followers. They supposedly have ‘influence’ – forgot old media, these are the new kids on the block.
However it’s always good to keep things in perspective, old media still has tons of influence, and when you look at Twitter perhaps a bit more. When a TV personaity like Ellen can go from 0 to 100,000 subscribers in a few days just by talking about Twitter on her program it kinda makes those new media influencers look like the days of UHF.

Of course this doesn’t even account for how many of those 100,000 followers are engaged and are actually being influenced by them… Just because they’re following doesn’t mean they’re listening.
Yep, this cuts both ways…for old and new media. A follower is just a number.
Josh, I completely agree. Numbers mean absolutely nothing. There are a lot of spammers out there gathering numbers all of the time like they are the Holy Grail of communications and community.
One person may have 100,000 followers and another may have 5 but those 5 followers are the CEO’s of large corporations who all respect his/her advice.
I think it’s much more about relationships than numbers.
